What does container unloading actually involve?
Container unloading sounds straightforward, but it is a specialism in its own right. Not every container arrives loaded the same way. There are two situations you will regularly encounter:
- Loose load: the container is packed with individual boxes, bags or products, without pallets. Everything must be unloaded by hand, sorted, counted and then built onto pallets. This is labour-intensive and requires experience to do efficiently and without errors.
- Palletised cargo: goods are already on pallets and can be unloaded mechanically. Faster, but verification of quantities, condition and labelling is still essential.
Service Pack is set up for both scenarios. With the right people, docking infrastructure and processes, we handle every container, regardless of how the cargo arrives.
From container to ready stock: the steps
Unloading is often just the beginning. What needs to happen next depends on your situation, but in most cases several steps follow before goods are truly available. Everything below is handled in-house at Service Pack, under one roof, without intermediate transport.
The container is emptied: manually for loose cargo, mechanically for palletised loads. Quantities are checked and any visible damage is noted at the same time.
For loose cargo, contents are sorted by SKU or product type, counted and registered. Any discrepancies are documented immediately.
When goods need to be forwarded directly to another location or customer, we arrange cross-docking: the load is reconfigured without intermediate storage. This shortens lead times and reduces transport movements.
Loose goods are built into transport-ready pallets, in line with your customers' or retailers' specifications.
Pallet and product labels are applied: EAN codes, FNSKU, CE markings, multilingual consumer labels or retailer-specific labels — all to your specifications.
Products that need to be repacked, reworked or adapted, due to a packaging change, a retailer requirement or a quality issue, are handled directly in our facility.
Processed goods are stored in our facility in Etten-Leur. You have visibility of your stock and we manage inbound and outbound flows according to your instructions.
Everything under one roof. Because all these steps happen in-house, there is no intermediate transport between unloading, processing and storage. That saves time, cost and transport movements, directly contributing to a greener supply chain.
From arrival to delivery: how it works in practice
For many of our clients, unloading a container is the start of a longer process. The goods arrive, and we take care of the full handling: unloading, sorting, labelling and then shipping to whatever location the client specifies. That could be a retailer, a distribution centre or an end customer.
Because we handle everything ourselves, from producing the labels to applying them and arranging the transport, the client has as little to worry about as possible. One point of contact, one process. The client can focus on their own business while we manage the logistics from start to finish.
When something is off, we keep communication open. If there is a discrepancy in quantities, damaged goods or something unexpected in the shipment, we flag it immediately and work through it together. No surprises afterwards, just transparency at the moment it matters.
Why businesses outsource container unloading
The most common reasons for outsourcing container unloading and processing:
- No own unloading bay, dock or forklifts available
- Insufficient staff for peak periods or irregular container frequencies
- Need for follow-on services (labelling, rework, storage) at the same location
- Lower total cost by placing everything with one partner: no forwarding or transport costs between links in the chain
- Fewer transport movements: lower CO₂ emissions, a demonstrably greener supply chain
- Competitive rates that replace fixed costs with variable costs
For businesses that receive containers regularly but do not want to run their own logistics centre, outsourcing is often the most efficient choice, both operationally and financially.
Service Pack: capacity, speed and broad experience
Service Pack processes hundreds of containers every year for clients across a wide range of industries: food and FMCG, retail, chemicals, cosmetics and e-commerce. Our advantage lies in that daily experience. We unload multiple containers every day, in multiple different ways. That means our people know what they are doing, our processes are proven, and there is very little we have not seen before.
We also put that expertise to work beyond our own site. For clients who have no experience with unloading containers themselves, we can go to their location if needed. We bring the knowledge, the people and the process.
Something many people do not realise: all containers look the same from the outside. The complexity of what is inside can vary enormously. How many products are in there? How many different SKUs? Are they stacked, loose or mixed? Those variables determine how long unloading takes and what is required. Our daily experience with all kinds of cargo means we can assess that quickly and accurately. That means we can give you a realistic estimate of how long your container will take, and align our planning and capacity well in advance.
Our facility in Etten-Leur covers 45,000 m² and is equipped with cross-docking capabilities and ample storage capacity. It is not unusual for us to process three containers in a single day, or twenty in a week. We work efficiently and make sure every container is emptied on time. Whether it is an occasional shipment or a regular weekly flow: we adapt to your volume.
We have no minimum volume requirements. Some clients send us over a hundred containers a year, others send one and that is the end of it. For us, that makes no difference. Every client and every container is handled with the same care.
One thing that also defines how we work is flexibility. It regularly happens that a client calls us on the day itself with an urgent request. A container needs to be unloaded today, not tomorrow. In many cases, we can make that happen. No bureaucracy, no minimum lead time — we look at what is possible on the day and get it done. That is the advantage of an organisation that is operationally active every single day and used to moving fast.
What makes the difference: everything that needs to happen after unloading can be handled in-house. Labelling, rework, assembly, repacking, storage, order picking: one partner for the entire chain, one point of contact, no quality loss through handoffs.
Real-world example: An importer receives two containers a month with consumer goods from Asia. The cargo arrives loose: thousands of boxes that are unloaded by hand, sorted and counted. Products are then given EU-compliant labels and stored. On an order basis, Service Pack delivers weekly to retailers across the Netherlands and Belgium. The client has no warehouse, no staff and no trucks, yet the logistics runs completely.
FMCG: specific demands on the unloading process
For FMCG wholesalers, additional requirements make the unloading process more demanding than in other sectors. Short best-before dates (BBD) mean goods must be processed quickly. Every day of delay is direct value loss. Service Pack works with FIFO principles and registers BBD data on receipt.
Food and cosmetics also carry strict hygiene and compliance requirements. Our facility is Skal-certified for organic products and ISO 9001-certified. That guarantees your goods are processed in a controlled environment with the correct documentation.
Seasonal peaks, such as promotional campaigns, product launches or retailer delivery deadlines, require flexible capacity. The scale of our facility and workforce means we can ramp up quickly without you having to arrange anything.
Finally, FMCG products often require a combination of services immediately after unloading. A container of products that need a seasonal sticker applied, repacked into retail packaging and delivered to a distribution centre: at Service Pack, that is one operation, not three.
Centrally located: 30 minutes from Rotterdam and Antwerp
Our location in Etten-Leur is no coincidence. We are approximately 30 minutes from the port of Rotterdam and a similar distance from Antwerp — the two largest container ports in Europe. That means your containers can be delivered to us quickly after arriving at the port, without long transport times or unnecessary costs.
For importers shipping via Rotterdam or Antwerp, our location is a concrete advantage. The container goes from the terminal directly to our docks, is unloaded the same day or the next, processed and, if required, stored or forwarded. No detour, no extra link in the chain.
When is outsourcing the right step?
Recognisable signs that it is time to outsource your container processing:
- You receive containers regularly but have no unloading space or capacity of your own
- Your current setup works at fixed volumes but struggles at peaks
- Multiple follow-on steps are needed after unloading, currently spread across different parties
- You want to reduce total logistics costs by cutting out links and transport
- You are looking for a partner that grows with you and does not charge extra for every change
Service Pack BV handles container processing and Value Added Logistics from 45,000 m² in Etten-Leur, 30 minutes from Rotterdam and Antwerp. We hold ISO 9001 and Skal certification and work for importers, wholesalers and retailers across a wide range of industries. Hundreds of containers a year, all cargo types, everything in-house.
